Straight, L-shaped or U-shaped
A straight desk suits small offices and open rows. An L-shape adds a return for a second monitor or paperwork and works well in corners. A U-shape adds a bridge and credenza, giving an executive office storage and a meeting edge, but it needs the most floor area and clear space behind the chair.
Whatever the shape, leave room for the chair to pull back and for a visitor or co-worker to pass. Our Fort Lee guide walks through chair clearance in compact rooms.
Inspecting a used desk
Commercial casegoods are built for heavy use, so a used desk can be a sensible buy when it passes a close look:
- Edge banding is attached, with no peeling or swollen core
- Drawers glide smoothly, close fully and keys are available for locks
- Top and frame do not wobble when you lean on them
- All components are present: modesty panel, grommets, hardware
- Finish matches any pieces you are keeping
Delivery and assembly questions to ask
Larger desks often arrive in sections. Ask which piece is the largest and compare it with your route in. Confirm whether assembly is included and how the delivery is scheduled with your building. These details are set per order.
